Scanning Japan

These four artists - Sofie Siegmann, Whitney Vosburgh, Irene Imfeld, and John Watson - were part of an artist exchange between the bay area and Japan. The artists traveled to Japan to learn about the culture and made work about their travels and response to Japan. There was also work made by Japanese artists about their response to the bay area. Three of these artists work with photographs and one with paint and mixed media in depicting their responses to the cultural experiences of Japan.

Work by Anders Knutsson
July 24-October 10, 2009

About this collection of paintings the artist says, “the image of the tree is accessible to all people – it is the universal, common to all races and cultures. The image of the tree consistently gives the same message: strength, endurance, power and a sense of majesty. Each image is of a “champion” tree – a tree that is the most magnificent of its species. Lastly, each tree has its own fascinating story; a unique relationship to human ideas and aspirations.”
